CJP seeks record of prisoners without challans

Posted on: Wed February 22, 2012

LAHORE, Feb 21: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday took strong notice of non-submission of case challans by police and sought record of all prisoners languishing in jails of Punjab without submission of their challans.

The CJP issued the direction to DIG (Investigations) Ali Amir Malik who failed to justify non-submission of challan of accused involved in murder case of woman lawyer Neelam Baryal despite a lapse of eight months. SSP (Investigations) Abdul Razzaq Cheema was also present in the court.

Admonishing the DIG, the chief justice asked him, "What would be your condition if you are kept in jail for eight months. Why you people do not submit challans within the stipulated time?"

The CJP summoned Punjab IG Haji Habibur Rehman on a short notice who, when appeared, undertook that the challan of the murder case would be submitted by Wednesday (today). He also undertook to take action against the delinquent officers.

Justice Chaudhry said it appeared that the police had no respect for court orders.

The CJP adjourned hearing for one day and also summoned the IG (prisons).

Accused Ali Nawaz had filed a bail application and submitted that relatives of his former wife (Neelam) lodged an FIR against him implicating him in her murder case. He said he was arrested on May 25, 2011 and his case challan had not been submitted so far
