Campbell defends Tony Blair over Iraq war

Posted on: Mon February 08, 2010

LONDON: Tony Blair s former communications chief gave an emotional defence of the ex-premier on Sunday, saying he had been subject to vilification over Britain s war with Iraq but was an honourable man .

Alastair Campbell, who was one of Blair s closest aides during 2003 US-led invasion, had to compose himself during a BBC interview in which he was pressed about the intelligence used to justify the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

He rejected repeated allegations that Blair misled parliament when he claimed the Iraqi leader had weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and accused the media of settling your scores rather than trying to establish what happened.

An ongoing public inquiry into the conflict in front of which both Blair and Campbell have appeared has reignited debate over the war, in particular over the intelligence that pointed to the WMD, which were never found.
