Pardon for Rehman Malik

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Tuesday warned President Asif Ali Zardari against pursuing the policy of direct confrontation with the judiciary to safeguard his own interests.

President Zardari is acting as a suicide bomber to cover up his crimes and sins, and has decided to take on the judiciary for the protection of his vested interests, Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said, while addressing a press conference.

He said President Zardari, for the last four months, had been acting behind the curtain in the governments policy to defy the Supreme Court verdicts and now the president had decided to play this role openly. Zardari wants to take revenge from the nation for his crimes and sins, he added.

Nisar said the recent attitude of the government was enough to reflect that it was following a clear selfish policy for the protection of its interests and leading the situation to direct confrontation with the judiciary.

Terming Zardari a dictator wearing the dress of democracy, Nisar said the PML-N had boldly struggled against a dictator in military uniform and it would strongly face the dictator without uniform, who was also following policies of Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf also defied and violated decisions of the judiciary and Zardari is also pursuing the same policy, he said.

He said the government had been playing a very dangerous game and taking the country to a blind street, adding it would not succeed in its plans. He said the PML-N would play its effective role inside and outside parliament for the protection of democratic and national institutions.

Our special correspondent adds: Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan says the latest midnight action by the occupier of the highest office of the land amounts to a gross violation of the rule of law, democratic norms and all codes of morality.

The government is known to have done quite a few things during its tenure of office, which border on the absurd, and it seems to have lost its sense of direction, he said while talking to The News on the grant of pardon to Interior Minister Rehman Malik by President Asif Ali Zardari against the upholding of his conviction by the Lahore High Court.

The opposition leader said it now seems abundantly clear that the government was bent upon diverting the public opinion from the core issue of the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and millions, if not billions, of Pakistans money stolen from Pakistan and deposited in foreign banks.

It is an absurd, fool hardy and desperate strategy worked out by Asif Zardari and a group of his cronies who seem to have absolutely no interest or respect for the rule of law or the political and democratic process, Chaudhry Nisar added.

By their actions, he said, they are taking the government and in the process the country to nowhere. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) views with serious concern the policy of the rulers to put the entire national and democratic interest of Pakistan at stake in order to put a lid on the efforts to retrieve the the stolen millions of Pakistan, he said. We will mount efforts within the National Assembly and outside to thwart the designs of the rulers in this connection.

He said rulers have expressed themselves before the world when, on the one hand, the prime minister shouted from the rooftop that all the decisions of the courts would be respected and implemented, whereas, on the other, midnight orders are passed to nullify the same without any fear of God or the people of Pakistan.
