Roadside blast kills two peace committee members

GHALLANAI: Two members of the Baizai peace committee were killed and two others injured when a remote-controlled device went off at Lakhkar Killay in the militancy-hit Baizai subdivision of Mohmand Agency on Tuesday. Also, a militant was killed in a clash between security forces and insurgents in Badi Koroona in the Michini area.
Official sources said four members of Baizai peace committee were on their way to Ghallanai, headquarters of Mohmand Agency, from the remote Baizai area in their car. When they reached Lakhkar Killay, a remote-controlled bomb planted by suspected militants on roadside exploded, killing two members of the peace committee, identified as Javed Khan and Noor Muhammad on the spot, while two others sustained injuries. One of the injured was identified as Malik Khan.
The injured were shifted to the Ghallanai Hospital from where one of them was transported to a hospital in Peshawar due to critical condition. The sources said the vehicle was badly damaged in the blast.
Meanwhile, security forces carried out a search operation in Badi Koroona near Michini area of Yakkaghund subdivision. A fierce clash between security forces and militants erupted when the latter attacked the former with light and heavy weapons. Security forces returned the fire and killed one of the militants, identified as Imran, while the others fled the scene.
The forces, the sources added, defused six improvised explosive devices during the search operation in Ali Kor, Wali Kor, Hayat Kor and Azad Kor in Qandharo area. Meanwhile, security forces shelled suspected hideouts of the militants in Lakhkar Killay, Manzari Cheena and adjoining areas of the remote Baizai subdivision. No loss of life or damage to property was reported in the action.
