12-year-old Meena Gul

TIMERGARA: Twelve-year-old Meena Gul, now in the custody of the Dir Lower Police as a suspected would-be bomber, made explosive disclosures on Wednesday when she claimed that another girl, Farida, who escaped with her from the militants" custody in Bajaur Agency, was the granddaughter of jailed TNSM leader Maulana Sufi Mohammad. In interviews with reporters of print, radio and television channels on Wednesday, she said she and Farida managed to escape on the plea that they would graze the cattle and reached Munda in Dir Lower from Bajaur"s Charmang area. She said she lost Farida near Munda and was now unaware of her whereabouts. The girl said she did not want to become a suicide bomber and thus escaped from the clutches of militants. Meena Gul, a shy Afghan girl who tried to hide her face while talking to reporters and wore old clothes, was taken into custody by the police. She was presented before the media by Dir Lower District Police Officer Mumtaz Zarin on Tuesday in Timergara. She is presently being investigated. Meena Gul said warplanes were bombing the area when she fled and was unaware as to who was killed in the attack. She said her brother Sulaiman, who was a Taliban fighter, tried to persuade her become a suicide bomber if she wanted to go to the Heaven. She said another brother of her, Sheena, died while fighting the security forces in Bara Banda in Swat. The girl, who sometimes talked inconsistently, claimed her family belonged to Bagram area in Afghanistan and that her father was a Taliban commander and later shifted to Charmang in Bajaur. She said her father and brother fought both against the US and the Pakistani forces, blew up schools in Raghagan area in Bajaur and recruited fighters in the Chinar camp. Meena Gul did not spare any of her relatives while narrating her story and implicating them in acts of violence. She said her sister-in-law Zainab was in Afghanistan training female suicide bombers after having taken eight other women with her. She said her eight-year-old sister Naheeda too was sent to Afghanistan. She claimed Zainab wore men"s clothes during the fighting in Loisam in Bajaur against the Pakistan Army and fought actively on the frontlines. She claimed one of her brothers was involved in the bomb explosion in Khyber Bazaar in Peshawar and that her cousin Abu Narwan was injured in the same blast and was now staying at the Jalozai Camp in Nowshera. ccording to Meena Gul, her brother Ismail received training from the Pakistani militants" group led by Dr Ismail in Bajaur. She said this brother of her, Sheena, was killed along with Dr Ismail"s son, Usman, in a clash with security forces in Swat"s Bara Banda area. She said her family had lived in Karachi, Swat, Peshawar and different parts of the Punjab.
