Agencies had information about attacks in Peshawar

LAHORE: Intelligence agencies had alerted the law enforcement agencies about possible attacks in Peshawar in two letters. One the letters was dispatched to officers concerned on March 31, 2010.
A copy of the letter No was dispatched to the provincial police officer/IGP Punjab, the Additional IGs of Police, Special Branch/CID, Punjab, Lahore, all the divisional commissioners in the Punjab and all the RPOs in Punjab/CCPO, Lahore.
The subject of the letter was Information Report-87 which reads: Appended below please find extracts of a secret report: a) An explosive laden vehicle (red coloured, Registration Number 5663) is likely to be used in some terrorist activity in Abbotabad or surrounding areas. b) A vehicle (white coloured, registration No 7274) loaded with explosives/ carrying one suicide bomber is likely to move from Bara towards Peshawar for some terrorist activity. c) Young children (aging 6-12 years) are being used for smuggling of weapons from Bara to Peshawar and the Punjab.
The letter further reads: In view of the above, it is imperative that all the law enforcement agencies at all levels remain on high alert. The original letter No 3/9/2009 (O&I)-1368 was issued on March 26, 2010 by the Ministry of Interior, National Crisis Management Cell to Chief Secretary AJ&K and Gilgit Baltistan, Home Secretaries Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan, IG FC NWFP and Balochistan, DG Rangers Punjab and Sindh, Commander Frontier Constabulary and to many others. The subject of the letter was Threat Alert-155 and its text reads: Reportedly, terrorist commander cover name Marhaba disclosed that few suicide bombers have been prepared for suicide attacks in Peshawar in near future. Terrorist Ameer of Mir Ali has selected one Hafiz-e-Quran terrorist for some special mission (probably suicide mission). Time/place of attack not known. The letter was forwarded for extreme vigilance, heightened security and preventive measures to avoid any untoward incident.
Despite the threat alerts, terrorists attacked the US Consulate in Peshawar on Monday. Police and sensitive agencies have yet to probe whether the same vehicle and terrorists mentioned in the letter were used in the suicide bombing or not.
