Call given by SNPA against 18th Amendment, NFC

SUKKUR: A strike was observed in interior Sindh on Thursday on the call of the Sindh National Progressive Alliance, a conglomerate of the province s nationalist parties, to protest against the 18th Amendment, the NFC Award and lack of provincial autonomy.
Reports said the strike was observed in Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Ghotki, Larkana, Thatta, Dadu and other towns. Commercial and business centres remained closed and activists of the nationalist parties took out protest rallies, and set on fire tyres in Upper Sindh.
Police at the commercial centres, railway stations and bus stands, equipped with tear-gas shells and batons, remained on high alert. Activists alleged that Sindh was ignored in the constitutional package and rights of the smaller provinces were not recognised.
Our Thatta correspondent adds: A complete strike was observed in the town. Some miscreants pelted stones on vehicles, forced them to go off the roads. Police chased away the miscreants. The police continued patrolling on the main roads and posted pickets at sensitive points. However, shops started reopening at around 5:00 pm.
Our Dadu correspondent adds: A complete shutter-down was observed in all the major cities and towns of Dadu, Jamshoro and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts. Kotri, Thana Bola Khan, Manjhand, Sehwan, Bhan Saeedabad, Johi, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Mehar Warrah, Qambar and other cities and towns positively responded to the strike call.
Thirteen different demonstrations were taken out in these cities and towns by workers and activists of the nationalist parties. In several cities and towns, clashes also took place among the police, shopkeepers and workers of the nationalist parties on the matter of forced closure of shops. Majority of schools also could not function due to the strike. Public transport also remained thin on link roads and main roads.
Our Larkana correspondent adds: Larkana, Naudero, Ratodero, Bunguldero, Shahdadkot, Qubo Saeed Khan, Sajawal, Berochandio, Mirokhan, Behram, Wagan, Lalurank, Wareh, Nasirabad, Khairpurjoso, Radhan, Usman Kalhoro, Sobdar Sargani, Badeh, Dokri, Gerello, Khair Mohammad Arija, and Bakrani remained completely shut and a wheel-jam strike was also observed in these places.
Nationalists staged demonstrations and took out rallies from several towns and villages and staged sit-ins outside the Town Hall and Jinnah Bagh Chowk, Larkana, chanting slogans against the ruling party. Forty-five nationalist workers were arrested.
Our Nawabshah correspondent adds: A complete shutterdown was observed in the city. All the main bazaars, markets and shops remained closed. However, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the district.
APP adds from Hyderabad: A partial strike was observed in the district. Vehicular traffic remained thin. Incidents of aerial firing and burning of tyres were reported from some areas of the city. In the downtown, business activity remained slow, as some shops pulled the shutters down. The shops in Qasimabad, Bhitai Nagar and Hussainabad remained completely closed.
