Customs seize huge quantity of drugs; two held

PESHAWAR: In a joint operation, the Anti-Narcotics Force and the Customs Intelligence foiled an attempt to smuggle heroin worth millions packed in drilled semi-precious Lapis Lazuli stones at the Cantonment Railway Station here on Thursday.
Officials of the railways police and the Customs Intelligence said the stones had been transported from Afghanistan and were about to be shifted to India. They said that on suspicion, they unloaded the consignment, adding that the stones had been packed in 284 sacks and each stone was of different size and weight but of the same variety of Lapis Lazuli.
The stones were broken on receiving information, an official Suhail said and added that two persons had been arrested in this connection. Talking to the media at the dry port of the station, Deputy Collector Customs Rashid Habib said that the consignment, weighing 16 tonne, was packed in a container, which was bound for Jaipur city of India. He said two accused exporter Abdul Aziz and Customs clearing agent Ayaz, had been arrested and investigation was under way. He said the drugs had been packed inside the drilled stones and packed with chemicals in such a way that one could hardly detect the joints.
