International Women s Day

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari urged the members of parliament to revisit the discriminatory laws against women to make Pakistan a more tolerant, harmonious and secure country.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani lauded the women for making relentless efforts and rendering sacrifices in creating a just and fair society in Pakistan. In a message on the International Women s Day, to be observed on Monday (today), Zardari said: The observance of the International Women s Day today under the auspices of the United Nations demonstrates that women everywhere are waking up.

 On this occasion, I wish to congratulate the women of the world in general and of Pakistan in particular and salute them for their struggle for emancipation and an end to discrimination. He congratulated the Ministry of Women Development for arranging special events to celebrate the day.

He said this year s theme, equal rights, equal opportunities; progress of all required that legislative and administrative steps be taken in the direction of gender equality and emancipation of women in the country.

It is reassuring that in accordance with this year s theme, the government had enacted a far-reaching legislation aimed at protecting women from harassment at workplace, he added. The president said the government had declared the women as beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Program as well as of free distribution of state lands in the command areas of the dams proposed to be built in the country.

Meanwhile, in his message on the International Women s Day, the prime minister said: I would like to congratulate the women of Pakistan and the world over for their relentless efforts and sacrifices they have and are still making to free this world from discrimination, oppression and biases.

He said the empowerment of women was the top priority of the government. I take the opportunity to reaffirm our national and international commitments for the protection of women rights, with a special emphasis on this year s theme.

Concerted efforts were being made for the social, economic, legal and political empowerment of women to secure equal rights and opportunities for them in every field of life, he said, adding that these initiatives included micro-credit facility, skill training, rehabilitation of women in distress, mobility services and raising of awareness.

He said the government would review, repeal and amend all other discriminatory laws to safeguard and promote the interests of women and to achieve gender equality in accordance with the Constitution.
