Rabbani declines to accept govt assignment again

ISLAMABAD: Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, Chairman, Parliament s Special Committee on Constitutional Reforms (PSCCR), has declined to accept any governmental assignment yet another time.
He will continue as member of the upper House of Parliament till March 2012. Mian Raza Rabbani was leader of the House in the Senate and federal minister for law and justice in the Gilani Government, but he developed complaint about a tall house in the federal capital and resigned from both the positions.
He was promised the s chairmanship by the party leadership, but was betrayed when the Senate chairmanship was decided. Later, he became the PSCCR chairman on the persuasion of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and other parliamentary group leaders.
Sources close to Mian Rabbani said that he was offered some important slots on more than three occasions since he stepped down, but, taking a principal stand, he refused the offers. He has been yet again offered an exalted slot on completion of the task of his committee, but he has declined, the sources said.
It has been speculated that Mian Raza Rabbani would not accept any office in the administration as long as Asif Zardari is staying in his office. He enjoys excellent relations with the prime minister and enjoys due respect from his colleagues in Parliament, including party leaders.
Rabbani is known for his integrity and taking principled position on various issues and for this reason, he had been opposing several government s moves in the upper House of Parliament. Senator Raza Rabbani is son of former Air Force officer Mian Ata Rabbani, who served Founder of the Nation Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah as his ADC.
Rabbani did not accept any additional remuneration for the gigantic task of his committee that overburdened him financially. He has no plan to quit the Pakistan People s Party (PPP), and he would continue to side with it in Parliament, but he will take position on issues of his conscious, the sources added.
