Rabbani to defend PCCR s role in 18th Amendment case

ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of the Implementation Commission of the 18th Amendment, Mian Raza Rabbani, will restrict himself in the Supreme Court to defend the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms (PCCR) for reaching a consensus.

He has decided to take all the record of proceedings of the parliamentary committee to the apex court, which is set to start the hearing in a case against the amendment on May 31.

Sources said Raza Rabbani would present the record of minutes of the nine-month proceedings of the committee to the Supreme Court.

Rabbani, who is already keeping distance from the Federation s reply to the Supreme Court on the 18th Amendment, wherein the government team raised an objection to the presence of Chief Justice Ifthikar Muhammad Chaudhry in the larger bench, which is hearing the case against the 18th Amendment.

Sources close to Raza Rabbani said the adviser to the prime minister on inter-provincial coordination had all the respect for the apex court and would appear before it as the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms.

They said there was no communication between the Federation s team of lawyers, which was formed by Law Minister Dr Babar Awan to defend the 18th Amendment.

However, the sources confirmed that Raza Rabbani had discussed the legal points with Prime Minister Gilani.

The sources said Raza Rabbani, who was also made a respondent in one of the 18 different petitions filed in the apex court, would appear before the court and assist it to explain the role of the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms to reach a consensus on the 18th Amendment.
