Rain paralyses life in many parts of Sindh

SUKKUR: Rain in most parts of Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Ghotki, Larkana and other cities paralysed the routine life and communication network.

The rain spell in upper Sindh, which started two days ago, continued on Wednesday, badly affecting the communication system as well as routine life. Prolonged loadshedding increased miseries of the people.

Roads and streets submerged by rainwater while the authorities concerned failed to drain out the water. The rain affected the production of dates as well as other seasonal crops. Several mud houses also collapsed.

APP adds: Heavy rains lashed Khairpur, Noushehroferoze and Ghotki while many districts of Sindh received moderate to torrential downpour over the past 24 hours. The rain began late on Tuesday and continued till Wednesday evening intermittently, causing power breakdown as well. Various parts of Rohri and Pannu Aqil were also submerged. The six-hour-long power breakdown also affected the working of pumping stations. Rains were also reported from Kot Diji, Pir Jo Goth, Kashmore, Guddu, Shikarpur and other areas.

In Khairpur, heavy rain which started on Tuesday night and continued till Wednesday evening paralysed the civic life, inundating streets and low-lying areas. Scattered rains with thunderstorm are predicted to occur in Sindh, the Punjab, the upper NWFP and Kashmir during the next 48 hours, according to the meteorological department.

The Shikarpur city and entire district was also lashed by torrential rain on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning for several hours continuously. The civic life was affected and the traffic remained paralysed. The power supply also remained discontinued for hours in the city during rain.

The low-lying areas were inundated with rainwater and the date crop was badly damaged due to the heavy rainfall in the city and the district. No loss of life or other untoward incident was reported during the rain.

Our Thatta correspondent adds: Life was paralysed following heavy rains in Thatta and its adjoining areas on entire day here on Wednesday. Thatta city was submerged as all roads and streets were inundated with rain and sewage water due to the failure of drainage system. The main Shahi bazaar was under knee-deep water. The rain water inundated several shops in the main bazaar and other shopping markets, causing losses to traders. Roofs of several poultry farms caved in, killing thousands of chickens.
