National Highlights
According to a recent report submitted by the HEC to the education minister, so far 24 senators, 56 MNAs, 28 MPAs from the Punjab Assembly, 53 from the Sindh Assembly, 14 from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and eight from the Balochistan Assembly have been cleared.
The report said that the HEC received 1,095 photocopies of academic testimonials of parliamentarians from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). All documents were scrutinised in which 934 copies were found to be relevant and legible to be sent for verification to concerned institutions.
The ECP later provided copies of another set of 159 degrees. After scrutiny, 25 copies of illegible/irrelevant testimonials have been sent back to the ECP with the request to provide legible copies of degrees. By the first closing date, July 13, 2010, degrees/asnad verification with varying degree of completeness of the DSIF were received from 33 local institutions and five deeni institutions.
The HEC Review Committee scrutinised 736 documents (degrees testimonials and DSIF) duly signed (stamped by the institutions) and found 183 degrees complete according to its criteria and found 37 as fake/invalid. The universities withheld verification of seven degrees because, according to them, their cases are in the courts. The final status of the remaining 819 degrees of the MPs is still in the process whereas 61 degrees are still awaited from the HEC.
