Senate panel dissatisfied with NVM performance

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Youth Affairs has expressed its dissatisfaction over the poor performance of the National Volunteer Movement programme and has called upon the Ministry of Youth Affairs to chalk out a viable plan to improve the working of the NVM to achieve the desired objectives.The committee made these observations in a meeting held at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi to review the working and performance of the National Volunteer Movement.Members of the committee were of the view the NVM was a very positive initiative of the government to engage the youth of the country in constructive activities. However, it could not come up to the expectations, the committee added.The committee suggested a permanent legal status is required to make it a permanent body and a policy needs to be formulated to make it more active and real volunteer organisation. It expressed its dismay over the fact that only one meeting has so far been convened during last five years. It directed the ministry to formulate recommendations for making the NVM more lively and dynamic.It also directed the ministry to provide details of expenditure of various activities that have been carried out by NVM and the reach of the NVM should be expanded to involve the youth of remote and far-flung areas of the country and mobilise them for voluntary services.Earlier, Federal Minister for Youth Affairs Shahid Hussain Bhutto informed the committee about the aims and objectives of NVM. He said efforts are being made to bring improvement in the working of the NVM. He also informed the committee about the budget and other plans of the NVM. The meeting was attended by senators Muhammad Jehangir Badr, Maulana Gul Naseeb, Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi and Afia Zia, besides secretary and senior officials of the ministry. Courtesy : The News
