Sindh Assembly pays tribute to Sugra Solangi

KARACHI : Sindh Assembly on Tuesday paid tribute to the Pakistani woman, Ghulam Sugra Solangi from Sindh province, whom the US has awarded in recognition of her struggle for women rights in the society. A resolution tabled by Marvi Rashid which was later declared as amended and joint move by Speaker Nisar Khohro, was adopted by the house unanimously to honour the lady, who struggled for the betterment of women in the society.
The resolution came on the private members day of the assembly. Shazia Mari paid homage to Sugra, saying that she had been the victim of child-marriage tradition of the male-denominated society, and she fought not only for her rights but also for the women of whole country.
She said that demanding education or other basic rights including seeking divorce had been her religious and legal rights, which none could deny. She said the PPP government was already trying to empower women of Pakistan, which could only be possible if an encouraging environment was established.
Manzoor Wasan said that Sugre would be given a reception by members of the Sindh Assembly for her global recognition. He said she was a dedicated woman and had always struggle for the betterment of the society. Humera Alwani also hailed her achievement, saying that she is a r role model for other Pakistani women. She said Sugra had started undergoing troubles from her early age. She said Sugra s achievement had shown the strength of the Pakistani women and dispelled the impression that women were fragile or vulnerable in the society.
Sussi Palijo said Sugar had created a precedent for other women in the society and was a source of inspiration. Others who speak on the resolution were Marvi Rashdi, Anwar Khan Maher, Saleem Khursheed Khokhar, Shamimara Phanwar, Tauqeer Fatima, Nargis N. D. Khan, Shela Raza and Ayaz Soomro, paying rich tribute to her. Khursheed Khokhar said that the house should also pass a resolution to ban the forced conversion of minorities women, which was badly needed to protect the female section of other religious groups in the society.
Pir Mazharul Haq showed concerns over the surge in fake rights organisations, which were blackmailing the government officials and common people by filing petition in the court. He said the house should condemn the acts of such organisations. The speaker adjourned the session till Wednesday.
