Three die as bus falls off bridge in Karak

KARAK: Three persons, including a minor, were killed and 37 others sustained injuries when a Karachi-bound bus fell from a bridge on the Indus Highway near Ghundi Kalla area here on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses and police said the bus (LZB-3982), travelling from Bajaur to Karachi, fell from the bridge when its driver tried to avoid a collision with a car. Driver of the bus, Kalo Khan, and a minor, Uzma, died on the spot while another passenger Ghulam Saeed succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

A total of 37 passengers, including eight females, 19 males, four girls and six boys were injured and two of them were referred to a hospital in Peshawar in critical condition. A student of University of Peshawar, Humayun, told this scribe that the accident happened due to overtaking. He added that 44 passengers were on board and later the locals recovered the bodies and the injured persons from wreckage of the bus.

He said they rushed the injured to the District Headquarters Hospital, Karak and appreciated the efforts of the staff and arrangements at the hospital. He demanded of the government to provide more beds to the hospital to cope with such accidents, as the hospital was located near the highway and needed more equipment and facilities.Dr Shoaib of the DHQ Hospital told this scribe that two seriously injured passengers, Ibrar and Noor Samad, were referred to Peshawar.
